How To Post An Ad On Craigslist: Step Three, The Posting Description!

Happy Friday the 13th, faithful readers! Did you get through setting up an account? If you need any help, you can always ask me! I'd be happy to offer some tips... this week we are going to get down to the nitty gritty. The posting description!
Posting Description: Here we go! The meat and bones of the ad. Easy peasy! I like to use words like “great”, “cute”, “amazing”… depending on the item. Open with a repeat description (sort of) of the Posting Title… “This cute little solid wood chair would be a great addition to any home!” I will state whether it is an estate find, as much detail as possible, but that is your choice. Feel free to post your description as you like. I like to put measurements, a small description, asking price, that sort of thing. I will add dimensions if it is applicable (height x depth x width). Then my asking price. You can mention whether this price is firm, negotiable, or if you are willing to trade or partial trade. “Cash only” is recommended if you don’t want to bother with checks.

Also, lately I have been adding (especially with bigger ticket items) a line or two about spammers at the end of the ad. I will ask people to add a specific word or phrase to the subject line of their email, or put something specific in the body of the email. Something like, “NO SPAMMERS! Please put something SPECIFIC in your email, not just ‘Is IT still available’ or ‘Do you still have this ITEM’ or it will be deleted as SPAM!”. I will also add, “Please put the word [whatever] in the subject line or it will be deleted as spam”. OR ask for a phone number in the reply email, if they don’t leave one, delete it. Recently one woman put, “MEMORIESSS… all alone in the moonlight!!! (Entertainment Center)” and when I opened the email (who could resist?), laughing to myself, she said, “Hi there! Lyrics from CATS specific enough lol I am interested.” Classic!

When you are done with the title and description page, click “Continue”. This will bring you to the next page, which allows you to add pictures. At the top of the page, you will see that it reads: “You can add up to 8 images to be displayed with this posting”. Underneath, it reads: “Add images”, and there is a box that is empty, next to it, there is a clickable box that reads; “Browse”. Click on that. This will bring you to your “Favorite Links” on your computer. To the left, there should be a list that includes “Pictures”. If you click on pictures, it should bring up all the pictures you have on your computer. From here, you just need to find the pictures of your chair, and click on one to highlight it. Then, in the lower right corner, click “Open”. Repeat this for up to 8 pictures to post to your ad.

When finished adding photos, click the “Done With Images” block in the upper right hand side of your screen. This should show you your (almost) completed ad! Look it over, if there are any typos or if there is anything you want to change, click either “Edit Text” or “Edit Images” at the bottom of the screen. If it looks good to go, click “Continue”, and you should get a confirmation email letting you know that your ad has been posted!

Next week: Suggestions! Do's and don'ts (in my opinion) for your ad!
